As Max gets deeper and deeper into the Forest, he can't help but imagine what kind of ghastly creature could be living among the trees.
The very trees, imposing themselves above him, their creepy shadows dancing around the coppice, were already a rather frightening presence. They seemed to be staring him, their hollow holes like empty eye sockets, windows to all the most disturbing, nightmarish realms.
He shudders."I will not think about it. I will NOT."
As you've probably already guessed, Max wasn't exactly the bravest of the boys. He was, in fact, what some could call a completely-TERRIFIED-kid, in more scientific terms.
And as you probably have ALSO already imagined, a twisted, sinister forest was not exactly the coziest place to be wandering around alone in the middle of the night.
A precise measurement of Max's FEAR-O-METER at that moment, I fear, couldn't be properly described in any well-known parlance.
