Despite the complete absence of properly illumination, Max certainly knows the geography of his own home. Pff, he doesn't need a map. He absolutely and undoubtedly knows that his house has a KITCHEN, a BATHROOM, a LIVING ROOM, the strictly-forbidden-to-enter  PARENTS'S ROOM (even more forbidden so late of night), and his BEDROOM, which he now can't decide where exactly to go first.
