Boooy, those were some weird-ass drawings.

So, apparently, mice were real. Which, by consequence, implied the existence of a rat-like human demon that passed their life lurking in the shadows of the same sewers they were traversing blindfolded right now.

That, or some victorian-era kids were pranking them real good. But to be realistic, it was way more likely to consider the existence of rat-like-human-demons than that whole story to be a simple myth, as absurd as this idea may sound. After all, this is still Max’s story we’re going into.

It will always be the worst option possible, such was the boy’s good fortune.
