LIMINALIA

Mr. Rato gazed at Meryl, feeling their disturbance. He knew they couldn’t ask questions - that would risk to reveal some sort of awareness, which was a suspicion Meryl didn’t want to make. The Ratman knew that, and ENJOYED that. But, out of compassion, he said out loud, as in response to their questions:

“Poor things, aren’t they, Meryl? Their life is so short. Their bodies cannot endure the powerful magic forces of the Time Maze, so it doesn’t take too long for Deathto cease out their suffering. But I am fond of these little creatures, how couldn’t I? So I take care of them, provide them some kind of dignity, you see? They deserve it. After all, they’ve come a long way, already…”

And, picking out two pieces of cheese from the near drawer, the Ratman provided all his love and good care to his soon-to-cease companions - the mouses.
